The Stocker Astroscience Center will host our semi-annual welcome back star party, the first star party of the new year. We will start with refreshments, Dr. Webb will do a NASA update, followed by a drawing for some really cool astronomy books, then if clear we will head up to the observing floor to look through the telescopes. Astronomers, free munchies, celestial stars, we have it all!!

Dr. Caroline Simpson, FIU astrophysicist and winner of the prestigious Richard H. Emmons Award for Excellence in College Teaching education presented by the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, will be talking about the role women have played in the development of astronomy throughout the ages.

Astronomy Saves the World

Dr. Daniel Batcheldor, professor of Space Sciences at Florida Tech will discuss his new popular crowd-funded book, "Astronomy Saves the World: Securing our Future Through Exploration and Education". Dr. Batcheldor is also director of the SARA telescope on La Palma, Canary Islands. His books will be available for sale and possibly signing after the talk. Telescope will also be set up after the talk, weather permitting.

End of Semester Star Party: Charles Fulco form the AAS

Unfortunately our "Digital Civilizations" special exhibition was cancelled, however Dr. Charles Fulco from the American Astronomical Society will join us and talk about the upcoming SOlar Eclipse! Introduction by Dr. James Webb with tours of the Stocker telescope and special viewing opportunities afterward.

Dr. James Webb will discuss NASA's newest space telescope due to launch in October of 2018. It will be the most sensitive and powerful telescope ever built and will orbit the Sun beyond the orbit of the Moon. It will explore star formation, extrasolar planets, and the origins of galaxies among other things we cannot even imagine yet. And no, it is Not named after Dr. James R. Webb of FIU!

Mr. Bran Ferren, is the co-creator and chief creative office of Applied Minds Inc. He planned to visit and enlighten us with discussion about one of his many amazing projects. Due to Mr. Ferren's travel plan and busy schedule we have to cancel this talk at the present time.
