Dr. Fiorella Terenzi will be joining the FIU physics department as a full time physics and astronomy instructor. Dr. Terenzi earned her PhD in Astronomy from Milan converting radio observations from distant galaxies to sound: a process called sonification. The then became a leader in popularizing science, writing several best seller books, publishing a best-selling CD of "Galaxy music" and appearing on numerous talk shows and a busy lecture circuit. Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the Moon, died on August 25, 2012 at the age of 82. He was an amazing human being and explorer, taking manual control of the spacecraft Eagle and soft-landing it on the Moon in 1969. It is the end of an era indeed.

It is expected that on Thursday October 11, the first concrete will be poured for the Stocker Astroscience center. The foundation has been dug and rebar installed. We are anxiously awaiting the concrete trucks tomorrow.

Dr. James Webb won the 2012 Faculty award for community engagement. The award is given to a faculty member who goes above and beyond to Engage the local community. Dr. Webb was recognized for his work with the Southern Cross Astronomical Society, Miami-Dade schools, and his sponsorship of the physics and astronomy public lecture series which is going on it 20th year of attracting the community to science talks on campus.

Dr. Webb was chosen as a TEDxFIU lecture, to be given on November 15, 2012. Only 8 scholars out of the 64 who applied were chosen to give a TEDxFIU lecture. Dr. Webb will be speaking on Human's place in the Universe and what lies ahead as seen through the eyes of an astronomer.
